✦ Synopsis
Phosphorus-and nitrogen-containing polyols (aminomethylphosphine oxides) are used to obtain rigid polyurethane foams (PUF) with different phosphorus content. Some characteristic properties of the PUF are examined. The effects of structure and the amount of phosphorus-and nitrogen-containing polyols on properties of the polyurethanes, especially on their resistance to combustion, are studied. The following expression is employed to describe the relationship between this latter property as given by the oxygen index of PUF (AOI) and the amount of phosphorus present (Ce):
It is found that the phosphorus-and nitrogen-containing polyols are effective flame retardants for improving the resistance to combustion of rigid polyurethane foams; it is also concluded that the phosphorus present in these polyols is up to a certain degree more effective than the phosphorus present in the commercially available polyol Fyrol 6.
