✦ Synopsis

This is an immeasurable loss to the field of orthopaedic research, as he helped to lay the cornerstones in establishing the discipline of biomechanics in the orthopaedic clinical arena and in amalgamating the close relationship betwcen bioengineers and orthopaedic surgeons. Dr. Stauffer was always an extraordinarily compassionate, enthusiastic, and visionary leader, and he will be deeply missed by all of his colleagues and friends.

In 1968, Dr. Stauffer was given the mission to establish a biomechanics research program at the Mayo Clinic by taking a special sabbatical at the University of Iowa. He helped to organize a formal research program on the lumbar spine and became one of the founding members of the International Lumbar Spine Research Society. Upon his return to Mayo in 1970, he nourished and cultivated the Biomechanics Laboratory there while continuing to fulfill the duties required by his busy clinical practice. Dr. Stauffer was the primary investigator of a National Institutes of Health R 0 1 Grant on human gait analysis and its clinical applications. During the late 1970s, he actively promoted musculoskeletal rcscarch, both at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and in the Orthopaedic Research Society, and helped initiate a golden era of major advancements in diagnostic methodology, operative techniques, device development, and clinical and basic science investigations related to musculoskeletal disorders. Dr. Stauffer became the 24th President of the Orthopaedic Research Society, promoting his vision of a balance of basic and clinical research involving all disciplines, especially those related to cell and molecular biology. Dr. Stauffer's presence was greatly missed at this year's Annual Meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Society in New Orleans. He would have been very proud to witness the wonderful results of his untiring devotion and relentless efforts on behalf of orthopaedic research, which serve as an inspiration to us all.

Dr. Stauffer wanted to create a Musculoskeletal Institute, dedicated to excellence in patient care, education, and research, which would be shared by all orthopaedic and medical research communities in the Baltimore metropolitan area. This final goal would be the culmination of a most illustrative and productive career at The Johns Hopkins University. His great vision and strong commitment will be shared and fulfilled by all of his colleagues as a memorial to honor and cherish a grcat man who was loved and respected by all.

Dr. Stauffer was a private person, but he was also an extremely warm, sincere, and compassionate individual, who often stood alone in safeguarding the best interests of his colleagues. He was always there when needed, and he will always be remembered as an inspirational and motivational leader, encouraging all of us to reach for the stars.
