Lipo-chitin oligosaccharides (LCOs) are novel bacterial glycolipid signal molecules that mediate the species--specific symbiosis between rhizobial bacteria and leguminous plants. Nodulation of the legume roots and nitrogen-fixation in the resulting nodules by Rhizobia is controlled by the bacterial
