โฆ Synopsis
Concentrated silica-water suspensions were studied using a rotational viscometer to obtain rheological data and a Zeta-meter to determine the electrophoretic mobility. The viscometric data were analyzed as functions of shear rate, solids concentration and electrophoretic mobility. The dependence of electrophoretic mobility on pH was also studied. The Bingham plastic model and the power law model were applied to the data and the power law model described the data more closely. The parameters for the two models were correlated to solids concentration and electrophoretic mobility. The effect of particle size on apparent viscosity was also investigated. A conceptual model was proposed for the dependence of electrophoretic mobility on pH.
