## Abstract Although adenosine has been considered to depress release of neurotransmitter in central synapses, evidence for this notion is circumstantial. To obtain more direct and quantitative evidence, the suppressing action of adenosine on transmission through the mossy fiber synapse was examine

Abstract
The mossy fiber pathway has long been considered to provide the major source of excitatory input to pyramidal cells of hippocampal area CA3. In this review we describe anatomical and physiological properties of this pathway that challenge this view. We argue that the mossy fiber pathway does not provide the main input to CA3 pyramidal cells, and that the shortβterm plasticity and amplitude variance of mossy fiber synapses may be more important features than their longβterm plasticity or absolute input strength. Much of the current interest in the hippocampus concerns a rapid and persistent form of synaptic plasticity, called long-term potentiation (LTP), that is a candidate substrate for some of the mnemonic functions of this structure. There are at least two kinds of LTP in the hippocampus. One form is fo
## Abstract Vesicular zinc (Zn^2+^) is found in a subset of glutamatergic nerve terminals throughout the mammalian forebrain and is colocalized with glutamate. Despite wellβdocumented neuromodulatory roles, exocytosis of endogenous Zn^2+^ from presynaptic terminals has never been directly demonstra
The functional role of the abundant Zn 2Ο© found in some hippocampal synapses has been an enigma. We show here, using N-[6-methoxy-8-quinolyl]-P-toluenesulfonamide (TSQ) staining, that chelatable-Zn 2Ο© can be removed from hippocampal synaptic boutons using dietary depletion or with Zn 2Ο© chelators. Mossy cells give rise to the commissural and associational pathway of the dentate gyrus, and receive their major excitatory inputs from the mossy fibers of granule cells. Through these feed-back excitatory connections, mossy cells have been suggested to play important roles in both normal signal pro
