Precursor feeding experiments to Annona reticulata leaves demonstrated that coclaurine and reticuline are both derived from the common intermediate norcoclaurine; furthermore (S)-coclaurine was found to be the specific precursor to the major classes of isoquinoline alkaloids: protoberberines, benzophenanthridines and morphinandienones.
