โœฆ Synopsis

PcGive Professional 9.0 for Windows is an interactive package for undertaking research with simultaneous, dynamic econometric models: parameter estimation, hypothesis testing, and model simulation. 1 By design, PcGive Professional works only under Windows (3.1, 95, and NT). Nevertheless, the package combines powerful testing routines with graphic capabilities making it ideally suited to `test, test, and test'. The installation includes tutorial databases and the documentation covers tutorial sessions, econometric issues, and functionality of the various menus; the subject-sensitive Help menu is both detailed and helpful. I detected no problems in calculations dealing with the year 2000. Table I lists the main research tools supported by PcGive Professional 9.0 and contains information about its pricing and technical support. 2 Implementing an econometric task with PcGive Professional involves invoking two modules. The ยฎrst is GiveWin which controls input and output processes. The second depends on the task at hand: PcGive for single-equation models or PcFiml for multiple-equation models; switching between these two modules is easy. I illustrate the functionality of these three modules with an example to model US imports in terms of US real GDP and relative prices.

This module manages data; constructs and displays graphs; displays and stores regression results; prints data, results, and graphs; and supports a programing language. 3 In addition to serving as a

The importance of Aptech's (1999) GAUSS programming language for applied econometrics is widely accepted. A fresh look is needed due to the rapidly changing computing environment involving higher speeds, lower costs, Windows and the Internet. Accordingly, this review focuses on (1) GAUSS for Windows
