and Medicine REVIEW: Conference on R e c e n t Advances in Electron and Light Imaging in Bialogy H d d a t the New York City Sheraton Centre H c t e l , March 18-21,1986. Sponsared by the New Y a k Academy of Science, and chaired by Dr. A r d r e w Somlyo, U n i v d t y of Pennsylvania.
This four day conference @led together infarmation on the latest hiomedical developments i n t e c h n d q y and applications of light and &ctron micrcscopy.
The first day w a s divjdd into t w o m a j a r sessions: one on cryomicrawopy and the other on image F-4.
Dr. E. Z e i t l e r described t w o microscopes with supercondudng objective lenses, one mth a h @ helium stage at 6O K. Utilizing this instrument, he demonstrated the unit cell of paraffin. Dr. W. Baumeister illustrated d a c e reconstructions of s a m p l e s prepred in ultrahigh vacuum and at 15 K, shadowed with 0.5 nm of tungsten and tantalum. H e sugggted that the optical. diffraction patterns of s p e c i m e n s coated with g d d did not differ very much &-om those owted w i t h tunqskn/bntalum. Dr. E. Mandelkow ill^&?&& the Similarity of micrOtubule reconstructions f r o m specimens in ice, k o m n e g a t i d y stained specimens, and X-ray diffraction work at 3-4 nm &ution. Difi5-action paUerns, of f h g d l a e in amorphous ice, w e r e shown by Dr. J. Murray. Dr. K. Taylar discussed the image reconstructbn of calcium ATPase c r y ~z e d
