โœฆ Synopsis


We describe the fabrication and properties of optical waveguides formed in Z-cut LiTaO 3 by reverse proton exchange Li + -ยปH + in the LiNO 3 melts at 280-340 ยฐC. Surface waveguides, supporting TE modes, as well as the buried waveguides for TM modes have been produced. The diffusion constant D 0 and the activation energy Q for the reverse proton exchange process were measured to be 2.95 โ€ข ฮ™ฮŸ 7 ฮผฮนฮท 2 /1ฮน and 97.66 kJ/mol, respectively. Change in ordinary index ฮ”ฮท 0 = -0.034 in H:LiTaO 3 waveguides with An e = 0.026 was estimated from direct measurements.
