✦ Synopsis
To evaluate the performance of reverse osmosis membranes and prototype modules for the desalination of sea water under near technical conditions, a test station has been installed on board the nuclear research vessel NS Otto Hahn . A newly designed plate module with variable membrane area and favorable membrane exchange properties is being used as a test instrument for membranes and operating conditions . Initial test runs in varying sea water indicate the plate system with open raw water passage to be relatively insensitive towards fouling, thus yielding unobscured membrane performance data and suggesting further development of the present design .
