I . The spectral characteristics of the double stars cannot be accidental if an individual star is following its evolution according to the theory of giants and dwarfs. With some probability we can speak of a common origin of both components of a double star. Thus the difference of the physical properties of the components is to be attributed to the different speed of evolution owing to the difference of their masses. Following the old theory it must be expected that the com-:panion will always advance the primary, and thus will be of a .later spectral type. According to the giant and dwarf theory the companion also advances the primary, but if the system belongs to the ascendj,ng branch the spectrum of the secondary will be of-an earlier type than that of the primary, while in a system on the descending branch the spectrum of the companion will be of a bater type.
