A unique situation exists in the tail-bud of most vertebrate embryos. Even after the rest of the body has undergone considerable determination and development, tlie tail anlad oe contains a large mass of undifferentiated and presumably indifferent cells. The undifferentiated tail mass is most prominent, in chick embryos, from about the 18-to the 24-somite stages. This condition is preceded by a condensation of the primitive streak and followed by one in which the undifferentiated tissue gradually diminishes in bulk as the various tail structures form from it. A small remnant is present in the distal tip of tlie tail of embryos as old as 7 days. Graper ('33) has

Isolated 3-and 5-day chick embryo hearts contain sufficient endogenous substrates to maintain their pulsatile activity for several hours under aerobic conditions, and even after five hours in substrate-free medium the rates are 40 to 50% of the original rates. Carbohydrate appears to be an important
