✦ Synopsis

A method of treating the response of an infinite plate to a transient load, under plane strain conditions, is proposed. The final solution is given in the form of an infinite series of integrals. Each term of the series is readily evaluated by Cagniard's technique and only a finite number of terms are required to determine the state of stresses for any particular time of interest. The physical meaning of each of the terms is discussed. The series is shown to converge to a solution derived by an entirely different method.
