โฆ Synopsis
The dynamic response of an inl~nite, prestressed plate strip under a moving, distributed pressure load is determined. The transverse pressure load is assumed to propagate, with constant speed, in the direction which is parallel to the in~nite edges of the plate strip. The constant, uniform prestress acts in the plane of the plate in a direction which is parallel to the infinite edges of the plate strip. The problem is formulated as a boundary-value problem within the framework of the classical, small-deflection theory of thin plates, and solutions are obtained in terms of trigonometric series. It is shown that the shape of the resulting deflection pro~le of the plate depends strongly on the speed of propagation of the load as well as on the magnitude (and sense) of the prestress. Because damping is neglected, there exist combinations of load speed and prestress for which deflections become unbounded (critical speeds). The concepts of group and phase velocity are used to determine the steady-state response for supercritical speeds.
