✦ Synopsis


The response of a beam coupled in bending and torsion to deterministic and random loads is investigated by using the normal mode method. The loading on the beam may be either concentrated or distributed over its length. The deterministic load is assumed to be varying harmonically, whereas the random load is assumed to be Gaussian, having both stationary and ergodic properties. A general analytical theory is developed, and is applied to a cantilever aircraft wing for which there is substantial coupling between the bending and torsional modes of deformation. Numerical results for the dynamic flexural and torsional displacements are presented and discussed.
