โฆ Synopsis
The effect of a resonant scattering on the shape of a (spherical) wave packet is investigated for the illustrative case of an incident packet Lorentzian in momentum. In the elastic case, packets both broader and narrower than the resonance are considered, and the relation of their time-delays to the Wigner-Eisenbud estimate elucidated. The effects on the elastically-scattered packet of (a) a double-pole resonance and (b) inelasticity are obtained as well.
* Supported in part by the National Science Foundation. 1 We shall consistently use "outgoing wave" to designate the "total outgoing partial wave" of Eq. ( 2), which, if summed over all partial waves, yields the incident plane wave plus the scattered spherical wave. The "scattered part" of the outgoing wave is of course obtained by replacing S(k) in Eq. ( 2) by [S(k) -11.
