Abstract
Resonant Brillouin scattering by the transverse acoustic phonons is investigated for the first time in red HgI~2~ single crystal at room temperature by using the acoustic domain injection method. The measured results in the spectral region 579 to 800 nm show a nonβdispersive feature at the longer wavelength region and a decrease in the region very close to the fundamental absorption edge. The analysis based on the resonant Brillouin scattering theory and piezobirefringence theory shows excellent agreement with the present observation and predicts a resonant cancellation of the scattering cross section at 574 nm.
