✦ Synopsis

To determine the chromosome location and the linkage relationship between a gene conditioning resistance to powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis f.sp . hordei) in the barley cultivar Galleon and the hordein protein genes (Hor-1 and Hor-2) the `Detached leaf and 'SDS-PAGE' techniques were used .

The resistance gene in a Galleon selection is tentatively designated Ml-(Ga) . It was found to be linked loosely with the Hor-1 (C-hordein) locus at a recombination percentage of 35 .7 ± 4 .5 and very loosely linked to Hor-2 (B-hordein) at a recombination percentage of 40.9 ± 4 .6 . Since M1-(Ga) is linked with the hordein loci (located on chromosome 5) it is deduced that Ml-(Ga) is located on chromosome 5 closer to the centromere than Hor-1 and possibly close to Ml-p . The order of location of the three loci studied was found to be Hor-2 -Hor-1 -Ml-(Ga), with the latter toward the centromere .
