I read with interest the Special Article by Meyer zum Buschenfelde and colleagues (1) on autoimmunity and liver disease. In this review they refer to a 1950 article by Ahrens, Payne and Kunkel (2), crediting these workers with coining the term "primary biliary cirrhosis" to describe that now well-known clinical syndrome. It would appear, however, that that term was first suggested by Dauphinee and Sinclair in 1949, in an article from our hospital that appeared in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (3). In this article, Drs. Dauphinee and Sinclair review a classification of biliary cirrhosis existing at that time and, after presenting and reviewing 10 cases, suggest the term primary biliary cirrhosis as a substitute for what had previously often been referred to as "hypertrophic biliary cirrhosis'' or "Hanot's cirrhosis." The clinical material was originally presented at the 1948 meeting of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
