โฆ Synopsis
The behavior of a powder during isostatic compaction is simulated by a hollow sphere model. A flexible one-dimensional finite element analysis is presented for a hypoelastic and strain-hardening plastic behavior of the matrix at finite strains. Results are given for various cases, and the residual stresses after one or several compaction cycles are discussed.

The majority of manufacturing processes induce residual stresses in the surface of the component produced. These residual stresses can be either beneficial or in some cases detrimental to the performance of the component in question. This investigation involves the use of a previously described new
Compressive residual stresses are often induced by mechanical surface treatment such as shot peening for the purpose of improving fatigue life of components. Cyclic relaxation of the induced compressive residual stress, however, reduces the benefit. For component design and life management purposes
