β¦ Synopsis
The report does not attempt to cover all agencies doing fire research, but representative information is given covering most of the principal agencies, and an adequate picture of the kinds of work going on is presented.
The agencies include laboratories sponsored by various trade associations, by industries maintaining facilities for researci, and product development, private consultants, universities, research institutes, agen~qes of the several states of the United States of America. the U.S. Federal Government and the governments of other countries.
While not put together as specifically as history, the reports on the various agencies indicate some of the important dates and developments of research on fire. The history can be traced through the early work on automatic sprinklers out of which came not only the origin of the National Fire Protection Association but the establishment of the Factory Mutual Laboratories. Underwriters' Laboratories and the Laboratories of the British Fire Offices' Committee.
The reports cover fire testing of structural assemblies, measurements of the rate of flame spread over wall finishes, tests of flame-proofing treatments for wood and for fabrics and making determinations with respect to the combustibility, flammability and explosiveness of materials.
