Structural isomers of linoleic acid from vegetable oils by homogeneous rhodium catalysis
A range of vegetable oils (peanut, corn, soybean, safflower, and linseed) dissolved in ethanol have been subjected to isomerisation by reaction with [RhCl(C 8 H 14 ) 2 ] 2 (where C 8 H 14 represents cyclo-octene) and SnCl 2 at 608C for 24 h. Under these conditions methyl linoleate and linolenate gave products with 87 and 92% conjugated unsaturation respectively. In contrast to the alkaliisomerisation process used to produce CLA, the product with the rhodium catalyst is present as triacylglycerol rather than free acid. In a typical result for soybean oil the level of linoleic acid falls from 55.6 to 3.2% and the CLA produced consists of the 9c11t and 10t12c isomers (89.1%) along with 9t11t (8.6%) and 9c11c (2.3%).
