This book is intended to provide a basic introduction to some of the fundamental ideas and results of representation theory. In this preliminary chapter, we start with some motivating remarks and provide a general overview of the rest of the text; we also include some notes on the prerequisites โ€“which are not uniform for all parts of the notesโ€“ and discuss the basic notation that we use.
