✦ Synopsis


This study reviews the distinguishing characteristics of successful creative problem solving (CPS) facilitators and provides advice on ways t o develop these characteristics. Thirty-seven facilitators were interviewed about their successful use of creative p r o b l e m solving. These individuals include full-time employees o f -organizations as well as consultants that were hired by a variety of organizations. T h e data collected contained self-reports of effectiveness. No attempt was m a d e t o verify the facilitators claims o f "success" in facilitation. From the interviews, the characteristics were identified a n d categorized by logical analysis. These findings were then researched in the literature. T h e final product was organized around the a c r o n y m FACILITATOR. Several s y n o n y m s were u s e d t o describe characteristics, b u t the content was not changed for the sake o f organization.
