We would like to thank Dr. Botto et al. for their response to my Letter to the Editor [Froster, 1996].
I did not intend to imply that Botto et al. [1996] misclassified limb deficiencies. My intention was simply to point out that there are differences in the classification of limb defects.
It is commonly agreed that earlier performance of chorionic villus sampling (CVS) (6-8 weeks of gestational age) raises different questions than will procedures that are undertaken later in pregnancy (9/10-12 weeks of gestational age). We would suggest continuing the discussion of these issues in a paper in preparation where the information on these questions is extended (Froster and Jackson, in preparation). One of our reservations in this discussion is that it appears too simple to say that CVS is in itself responsible for possible damage in early pregnancy, when or more importance may well be the manner in which the procedure is done.
