✦ Synopsis

The preceding Comment by Bitto and Carter objects to our interpretation of the weak quantum beats observed for particular rovibrational states of B 2K HCO in the title article and postulates that the observed beats are anisotropic hyperfine quantum beats. We concur with their Comment, acknowledge the conceptual errors in our initial interpretation, and provide additional evidence in support of their new interpretation. The other results and conclusions of the title article remain unchanged.

Arguments are put forward that the quantum beats in the B 2~ electronic state of HCO attributed to a higher-order hyperfine perturbation by Tobiason and Rohlfing are most likely due to well-known hyperfine quantum beats. In contrast to Tobiason and Rohlfing's interpretation, hyperfine perturbations

The fragment HCO, produced from acetaldehyde by photolysis at 300 nm, was detected by laser-induced fluorescence of B 'A'g 'A' transitions. The fluorescence lifetimes of the HCO B state decrease rapidly as the photolysis energy increases, indicating strong predissociation of the B state. The radiati
