✦ Synopsis

Reply to letter to the editor: ''Static and seismic design of one-way and two-way jack arch masonry slabs'' I was pleased to read the letter to the editor by Mr Coatsworth concerning the above paper.

Our knowledge of the origins of the jack arch slab stretched only as far back as the late Victorian kiln buildings and warehouses around London. Mr Coatsworth's account of the Albert Dock Warehouses in Liverpool pushes back the history of the slab by at least half a century. Of particular interest to us was the employment of secondary beams and tie-rods by the early Victorian architect, Jesse Hartley, to join the main beams together. This illustrates the level of engin-eering sense and awareness so abundant in great Victorian builders. The fact that these slabs have survived for over one and a half centuries, supports our conviction that properly designed and constructed jack arch slabs are viable alternatives to the modern types of flooring.
