Hines' (1998, henceforth H98) comments on the paper "Testing theories of atmospheric gravity wave saturation and dissipation" (Gardner, 1996, henceforth G96) have certainly sharpened the discussion on this important issue. He has provided additional insights about several mechanisms which are believed by some to dominate wave saturation and dissipation in the middle atmosphere.

However, I disagree with several of his assertions which I shall now address in the order in which they appear in H98.
