✦ Synopsis


We agree with all Dr. Bensted's comments, with one minor exception :

the carbonation that he mentioned probably occurred largely during preparation, as Brunauer and Greenberg's (I) original analysis showed 0.6% C02, and this would probably have been sufficient to have produced the infrared band observed.

Carbonation would, as Dr. Bensted says, increase the degree of condensation, but we do not consider that this effect would be important in the present case.
