I thank Dr Netterville for pointing out the differences between the results obtained by him and Dr Csanady. Csanady (1973) derived a general formula for the concentration fluctuation variance and Netterville (1979) derived the more specific Gaussian formula that I refer to. The same Gaussian crosswind variation can be obtained from the exponential PDF, as seen in my Equation ( 7).

The second point raised by Dr Netterville relates to my assumption that the total concentration variance can be broken down into lateral and vertical components. I believe that the one-dimensional model can be tested with crosswind or vertically averaged observations of concentrations. In any event, the validity of the model is shown by its good agreement with the field data.
