We thank Dr. Cholongitas and his colleagues for their interest in our article. We agree with them that our results may not be extrapolated to populations with different characteristics, such as patients with acute liver failure (ALF) due to acetaminophen or with another etiology. This also explains the fact that a model developed in a particular set of patients is more useful in the same population of patients than in another patient population. The differences between the studies may be related to several limitations of even the best developed prognostic models, which include the following:
