Plate bonding using adhesives offers a viable alternative to welding or the use of mechanical fasteners for the repair and strengthening of over. stressed structures. The use of adhesives provides the additional advantage of allowing a wide variety of patch materials to be used. in the case of ship repairs, the economics are strongly in favour of adhesive bonding. This paper highlights the theoretical, experimental and practical aspects of bonding, and shows that providing due consideration is given to design criteria, adhesive bonding can out.perform conventional welded joints. Concentration is on plate bonding for ships' structures but the principles involved may equally be applied to the repair and~or strengthening of bridges or oil rigs.
Conventionally, over-stressed superstructures on ships / are repaired by welding plates made from the same material as the structure over the cracked area. This repair method has several disadvantages:
