Renewable energy has been with us for a long time; before electricity was invented windmills and waterwheels provided power for industry.

With the coming of the Industrial Revolution, power became the almost-exclusive province of the coal industry. Coal was hewn in appalling conditions by low-paid miners, and was burnt inefficiently, accompanied by volumes of smoke from vast numbers of chimneys. The population choked.
