Bruce Merrifield considered his coworkers in the laboratory as members of his other family (Figure 1). In his autobiography ''Life during a Golden Age of Peptide Chemistry'' he writes (page 220), ''We operate quite a close-knit group, willing to help and share.'' These feelings were best reflected in the relationships he established with his research assistants. Most of them joined Merrifield's research group immediately after graduating from college and worked closely with Bruce Merrifield on research projects that were separate from those of the graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Merrifield's research assistants met with him every day to review the progress of the previous day's experiments and discuss the next step.
