Apparently asib "is staying" which appears only in the last line must be understood with each line. For ana instead of ina see M. Tsevat, HUCA 29 (1958) 122, 131ff. After the preposition we find in most lines place names. Almost all of them occur elsewhere in the Alalahw tablets. Only Ia-ra-bi-ig seems new; it belongs to the type which is represented by A-da-bi-ig, Ab-ra-ti-ig, A-ra-zi-ig (all in Alalah texts), A-tal-lig or A-tal-li-ki (alphabetic atlg) (from Ugarit). The reason for which these men are given rations is not recognizable. Sarnita (1.8) is apparently away from his home town. The same may be true of Sebra (1.4) if luge-en-gi may be understood as a phonetic spelling of lukin.ge4(-a), Akk. mar sipri "envoy". Line 2 with its a-na it-ti-su-ma diverges from the norm; one cannot help thinking but that this much discussed phrase refers here to place and not to time. 285. se-em is here and elsewhere in texts from Alalah IV accusative and thus stands for se-am. This treatment is well known from Mari, see Ch.-F. Jean, RA 34 (1937) 169ff; A. Finet, L'accadien des lettres de Mari (1956) 8f. rev. 2: Should this not read rather [ .... ]-ba-ha-la-ti-ia, i.e. [....]-ba'latiya?

The presence of witnesses at the end points to a kind of contract. The last line (1.20) seems to refer to the cutting of the neck of a ewe. One might expect na-ki-is.

2: URUIr-gal-li (spelled Ir-IG-li) is obviously identical with the common URUIr-ki-il-li (var. Ir-ki-li) 13: More normally we find La-az-ze (i.e. Laz-we?).

In contrast with No. 289 the name of the receiver is not mentioned. However, because of the accusative se'em (see on 285) apil must be actival ("had barley paid to him").

6: The -we attached to Ga-ta-ha marks the genitive. 290. 14: With the name Za-az-ha-ri (cf. AT Index) compare the place name Za-za-ha-ru-wa (PRU IV 255). 20: "368 (measures of ZIZ) remain".
