✦ Synopsis
Macroscopic relations are derived between the dielectric constant and the fluctuations of the dipole moment of a substance. They can be used as a basis for a microscopic calculation of the dielectric constant. For an appropriate model this confirms Onsager's equation. A different relation, derived by H a r r i s and A 1 d e r and by H a r r i s. is shown to be incorrect because these authors start from a wrong macroscopic relation.
