of relief effects confirm that a contraction due to vacancy annihilation accompanies the formation of surface rods. This contraction is shown to account for the systematic dispiaccment of the axes of these rods from their invariant lines. Axial length changes show that the shape change producing the V-relief cannot be attributed to invariant plane strains with oppositely directed shear components, There is some evidence that thcsc length changes may be associated with a growth mechanism involving ledges paralfef to [TTl],.
