✦ Synopsis


In relation to reliability-based design of ceramic components, an investigation is made on evaluation of reliability of brittle solids under polyaxial stress states. Applying the maximum energy release rate criterion to the crack-like flaws in a brittle solid subjected to polyaxial stresses, the probability of failure Ps is calculated. As an analytical expression of the maximum energy release rate of a mixed mode crack, Gmax, a new expression derived by the present author is used. The result is compared with Pr calculated by using Lamon's expression of Gma x.
