## Abstract Colloidal silica will peptise Fe~2~O~3~ in alkaline media containing Na ions, but Ca ions cause flocculation of the silica and no peptisation of Fe~2~O~2~ occurs. It is concluded that the theory of Reifenberg on the formation of __terra rossa__ on limestone is untenable.
