✦ Synopsis

Simple and convenient expressions are derived for the relaxation time of a chemical system in which a product -or products -can be formed by two or more parallel reaction paths, interconnected by rapid equilibria.

The method makes use of the concept of affinity A, and is based on the facts that near equilibrium the net rate of an elementary reaction is equal to the exchange rate times A/RT --) and that the affinity of a rapid equilibrium is practically equal to zero. An alternative derivation of more limited applicability is also provided.

The conditions under which the relative contribution of any given reaction to the forward rate equals the relative contribution of that reaction to the reverse rate are specified.

The extension of the affinity method to mare complex chemical systems is discussed briefly.
