In strong magnetic fields up to 20 T the magnetoelectric effect has been measured in the tetrag~aal antlferromagnets GdzCuO4 and Sm2CuO4 m the temperature range of 1.9 K up to TN(Gd)=6 6 K and TN(Sm)=5 8 K respectively. The magnetoelectric effect exmts only m coincidence with the antiferromagnetical
