โฆ Synopsis
Measurements of the relative permittivity ฮต can provide information on gas imperfections. Such measurements are usually carried out using capacitance cells, but, recently, more stable microwave cavity resonators have begun to be used. In this work, we used our new, very small (internal volume of just 5.7 cm 3 ), and highly stable cylindrical microwave resonator to measure ฮต for nitrogen at pressures up to 4.015 MPa along the isotherm T = 300 K. The total fractional uncertainties at the 0.95 probability level in the relative permittivities were ยฑ3.2 โข 10 -6 to ยฑ4.5 โข 10 -6 for the TM010 mode, ยฑ4.2 โข 10 -6 to ยฑ5.2 โข 10 -6 for the TM011 mode, and ยฑ10.8 โข 10 -6 to ยฑ11.2 โข 10 -6 for the TM110 mode. We combined the ฮต measurements with recent values of the second and third ( p, V m , T ) virial coefficients to determine the first and second dielectric virial coefficients A ฮต (300 K) = (4.3921 ยฑ 0.0019) cm 3
โข mol -1 and B ฮต (300 K) = (2.0 ยฑ 1.7) cm 6
โข mol -2 , where the quoted uncertainties are at the 0.95 probability level. These results were in good agreement with published values at similar temperatures.
