✦ Synopsis
The nuclei magnetic relaxation rates of "C in mixtures of I3 CC4 with the four ethanols CH$DaOD, CDJCH~OD, CDJCD~OH, and CzDsOD have been measured. From the relaxation rates due to the '!C-proton magnetic dipole-dipole interaction closest distances of approach between 13C and the various functional groups ofetha-no1 have been determined. We obtained the result that fhc closest approach occurs for the OH group. Thus the orientation of ethanol is such that the hydroxyl group points towards the C-Cl bond.
