β¦ Synopsis
The change in the electric field at a nucleus in a molecule due to bond stretch is related to the force constant of the stretched bond. The validity of this relationship using approximate wave functions at the SCF and MP2 levels of theory is tested for the diatomic molecules H , HF, CO, and N . The effect of 2 2 basis set variation on H is also investigated.

## Abstract A simple theory is developed for the extension of a uniformly charged linear polyion attached at one end in an electric field. For a polyion consisting of a very large number (__N__) of Kuhn lengths (__b__), the mean extension in the direction of the electric field (__E__) is given accu
