β¦ Synopsis
In a recent study (Carlson and Hollaender, '45) it was found that the effectiveness of ultraviolet radiation of 2537 A wave length in retarding neuroblast mitosis was greater when it was administered at a high than at a low dosage rate, except for very low doses. TWh the increasing frequency of exposure of humans to ionizing radiations, it is becoming important to know about the relative effectivencss of different dosage rates of these radiations. The investigation reported here is the first of a series of experiments designed to esamine the effectiveness of different dosage rates in retarding mitosis.
METIIODS BND MATERIALS
Eggs of the grasshopper, Chortophaga viridifasciuta (De Geer), containing 14-day embryos (at 26Β°C.) were exposed to Iinomi doses of gariinia rays given at certain selected dosage rates and then made into hanging-drop culture preparations. Treatment was at room temperature (about 22.C.). Treated and control embryos were prepared from the same pod of Under Contract No. W-7405 Eng-26 Carbide arid Carbon Chemicals Corpora-'Contribution KO. 22 from the Department of Zoology of the University of tion for the Atomic Energy Commission.
