Flowers develop in higher plants by a series of unique events. In the first step, cells of the apex are directed to undergo evocation, resulting in the conversion of the vegetative meristem to a floral meristem. In some plant species, flowering is largely controlled by developmental signals, whereas in other plants the evocative signals are environmental, such as daylength or temperature. Recently, a gene involved in the regulation of flowering time was isolated using an Arabidopsis late-flowering mutant obtained by T-DNA tagging [1 ]. This gene, luminidependens (LD), is one
