Trypanosoma brucei subspecies undergo establishment and maturation in tsetse flies mid-gut and salivary glands, respectively. Successful establishment of trypanosomes in tsetse mid-gut as well as their migration to saliva gland depends on the ability of these parasites to adapt rapidly to new enviro

β¦ Synopsis
Trypanosoma brucei mitochondria contain unusual small circular DNAs of unknown function. These are catenated with a long informational DNA sequence containing genes homologous to those found in other mitochondria. Although these genes are transcribed throughout the life cycle, diferential production of the mitochondrial respiratory system during the life cycle is accompanied by differential abundance of speciJic transcripts and diferential polyadenylation of mitochondrial gene transcripts. Multiple transcripts occur for most of the mitochondrial genes. Transcripts of the apocytochrome b gene possessing nucleotide sequences at their 5' ends which are not present in mitochondrial DNA are found at stages of the life cycle when the respiratory system is expressed. These results suggest the presence of posttranscriptional mechanisms that regulate the expression of mitochondria1 genes during the life cycle of T. brucei.

The variable surface glycoprotein (VSG) genes of Trypanosoma brucei have been classified into two groups depending upon whether or not duplication of the genes is observed when they are expressed. We report here the observation of duplication apparently linked to espression of the ILTaT 1.3 gene in
The production of the variant surface glycoprotein coat of bloodstream form African trypanosomes ceases after conversion to the procyclic form. In the bloodstream stage alternate expression of different variant surface glycoprotein genes is responsible for the antigenic variation that occurs during
