✦ Synopsis

Pseudomonas putida MST, previously isolated in the presence of a-methylstyrene, has been shown to transform several substituted aromatic compounds. It was able to modify halogenated aromatic compounds by co-oxidation. It regiospecifically hydroxylates chlorobenzene and 2-chlorophenol to 3chlorocatechol, and 4-chlorophenol to 4-chlorocatechol; both metabolites were identified in the cultures.

## Abstract Biotransformation of 2‐chlorophenol (2‐cp) and 4‐chlorophenol (4‐cp) in the presence of phenol by __Pseudomonas putida__ (ATCC 49451) was investigated. Strain ATCC 49451 was unable to utilize 2‐cp and 4‐cp as the sole carbon and energy source. In the presence of phenol as a growth subst
