John Middleton est sur le point de fermer le bar lorsqu’une jeune femme accompagnée de son fils de trois ans font leur entrée par une humide soirée d’octobre. Il a envie de les protéger elle et son fils et de punir celui qui a fait ça mais il sait déjà qu’il s’agit de bien autre chose que simplement prendre en charge des êtres sans défense. Paige Lassiter éveille chez lui des émotions qu’il ne s’est jamais laissé aller à ressentir.
Mais quand l’ex-mari de Paige arrive lui aussi à Virgin River, il sait que son avenir est en jeu. Et s’il a retenu une chose de son temps chez les marines c’est que certaines choses méritent qu’on se batte pour elles.
