DDTl is converted to DDD by reduced myoglobm (rapidly), cytocbrome c oxidase, and a haem-contaiaiig undecapeptide derived from cytocbrome c. Cytochrome c itself is inactive. This demonstrates that an accessible haem site is necessary for the reaction. Spectrophotometric evidence is presented for an interaction between DDT and the undecapeptide. These results cast light on one of the bioIogical pathways for the breakdown of DDT.
